On Saturday, the University of Tennessee secured a commitment from offensive tackle David Sanders Jr., one of the top players in the college football recruiting class of 2025.

Steve Wiltfong of On3.com reports that Sanders made his commitment to Tennessee at Providence Day School in Charlotte, North Carolina. He selected Tennessee over three other finalists, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Georgia. Sanders articulated his decision in a statement, as per Wiltfong:

“This process has been a blessing, and I am extremely appreciative of the schools that have taken the time to consider and recruit me.” When faced with such a decision, there are numerous factors to consider; however, the most critical factor for me was the prospect of establishing a sense of belonging and belongingness. The institution felt like home, which is why I am making this commitment.

Sanders is the No. 2 overall player and No. 1 offensive tackle in his class, and he is rated as a 5-star recruit by 247Sports. It is unsurprising that Sanders, who is listed at 6’6″ and 290 pounds, has attracted the attention of numerous prestigious collegiate football programs. Sanders received scholarship offers from a variety of institutions, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas, and a host of others, in addition to his finalists.

Tennessee is on the brink of having a top-five recruiting class in 2025, despite the fact that it is still relatively early in the process. The 2025 class of the Volunteers is presently ranked sixth in the nation, according to 247Sports. The class consists of 22 commits, including one 5-star and 11 4-star prospects.

In addition to Sanders, the most notable individual to have committed to Tennessee for 2025 is quarterback George MacIntyre, who is ranked as the No. 58 overall player and No. 8 quarterback in the class by 247Sports. Despite posting declining records in three of four seasons from 2017 to 2020, Tennessee has been on the rise. Josh Heupel, the head coach, has guided the Vols to a bowl game in each of the past three seasons.

The team achieved a 7-6 record in 2021, an 11-2 record in 2022, and a 9-4 record last season. Tennessee could pose a threat to the College Football Playoff in the future and compete for its first national championship since 1998 with Sanders’ imminent arrival to the program.
