Growing up with a last name like Osgood in the heart of Hockeytown comes with a special kind of pressure—and pride. But for 14-year-old Max Osgood, the son of former Detroit Red Wings goaltending legend Chris Osgood, that name is more than a legacy; it’s a source of inspiration.

Now playing for the Little Caesars 13U AAA team, Max is beginning to carve out his own path in the sport that made his father a household name. Despite the early comparisons and the weight of expectations, the young Osgood embraces the connection to his dad’s storied NHL career.

“I look up to him a lot,” Max said in a recent interview. “He’s not just my dad—he’s someone who worked hard and did amazing things in hockey. I’d love to be like him one day.”

Chris Osgood, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and one of only a handful of NHL goalies to win over 400 games, spent most of his 17-season career in Detroit, becoming a fan favorite for his calm demeanor and clutch performances. Known for backstopping the Red Wings during their dominant years in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Osgood’s influence still looms large in the hockey world—and especially at home.

According to those close to the family, Chris has taken a balanced approach to his son’s development in the sport. While he’s happy to lend advice and share stories from his time in the NHL, he encourages Max to enjoy the game and find his own style.

“Chris doesn’t push him,” said a family friend. “But you can see the bond they have. It’s built on hockey, sure, but it’s more about respect and love for the game.”

Max’s current play in the youth ranks is already drawing attention. Coaches describe him as focused, technically sound, and calm under pressure—a description that could easily apply to his father during his prime. Though Max hasn’t confirmed whether he’ll follow Chris into the goaltending crease, many observers note the natural instincts and confidence that often hint at future success.

In the meantime, Max is focused on the fundamentals: improving his game, helping his team, and enjoying the sport that’s been part of his life since day one.

“I just want to get better every day,” he said. “My dad always tells me to stay humble and work hard, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

Chris Osgood has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, working as a broadcaster and helping develop young talent behind the scenes. But when asked about Max, he lights up.

“He’s got the love for the game, and that’s what matters most,” Chris said. “Whatever he decides to do, I’ll be proud. But yeah, seeing him out there in skates? It brings back a lot of memories.”

As Max Osgood continues his journey, Red Wings fans will no doubt keep a close eye on the young player with the familiar name and a familiar fire in his heart.
