In a bold move to fortify their top-six forward group and push toward a Stanley Cup run, the Edmonton Oilers have officially signed star winger Jake Guentzel to a five-year contract worth $42.5 million ($8.5 million AAV), sources confirmed early Tuesday morning.

Guentzel, 30, was one of the most sought-after free agents on the market this offseason after a strong year split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Carolina Hurricanes. Known for his elite hockey IQ, goal-scoring touch, and playoff pedigree, Guentzel brings much-needed depth and scoring support to a roster already featuring superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

The Oilers’ front office, led by GM Jeff Jackson, prioritized adding a top-line winger after their heartbreaking playoff exit in the Western Conference Finals. Guentzel, who tallied 30 goals and 47 assists for 77 points in 72 games last season, fits that bill perfectly.

“Jake is a proven scorer with tremendous playoff experience,” Jackson said in a statement. “His ability to produce at even strength and on the power play makes him a perfect complement to our core group.”

Guentzel reportedly chose Edmonton over several other contenders, including the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers. Sources close to the situation said he was impressed by Edmonton’s commitment to winning and the opportunity to play alongside the league’s most dynamic players.

This signing marks a major commitment from the Oilers as they look to keep their championship window open. With Guentzel now on board, the Oilers boast one of the most dangerous top-six forward groups in the NHL — with McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, Nugent-Hopkins, and now Guentzel leading the charge.

Guentzel also brings extensive postseason experience, having won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2017 and racking up 67 points in 69 career playoff games.

Oilers fans are already buzzing with excitement at the news, viewing this as a statement signing that could help deliver the franchise’s first Cup since 1990. Training camp can’t come soon enough in Edmonton.

Stay tuned for more on this developing story.
