DURHAM, N.C. — The Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball program was dealt an unexpected blow this week as head coach Jon Scheyer sustained a lower leg injury during an offseason training session, forcing him to temporarily step away from his duties.

According to a statement released by the university, the incident occurred during a team conditioning drill when Coach Scheyer, 37, awkwardly landed while demonstrating a movement, resulting in a torn Achilles tendon. He was immediately evaluated by team medical staff and underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning at Duke University Hospital.

Scheyer is expected to make a full recovery but will be in a walking boot and begin physical therapy within the coming weeks. The recovery timeline is estimated at 4–6 months, meaning he may miss the start of the Blue Devils’ fall training camp, though the university has not ruled out a return before the 2025 season tips off.

Associate head coach Chris Carrawell will assume interim coaching responsibilities during Scheyer’s absence. Carrawell, a former Blue Devil himself, has been a trusted member of the coaching staff since 2018 and brings strong leadership and continuity to the program.

“We’re all behind Coach Scheyer as he recovers,” said Carrawell in a press briefing. “His energy, vision, and presence are irreplaceable, but we’ll keep the program moving forward and uphold the Duke standard.”

Players and staff have shown their support for Scheyer, many taking to social media with well wishes and affirmations of their commitment to staying focused and united.

This injury marks a rare personal setback for Scheyer, who took over the head coaching role in 2022 following the retirement of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski. Under his leadership, Duke has remained a perennial powerhouse, and expectations are high for the upcoming season with a top-tier recruiting class on the way.

While the timing is less than ideal, the Duke community remains confident that Scheyer’s resilience and the depth of his coaching staff will ensure the Blue Devils stay on track as they prepare for another deep NCAA tournament run.
