In a stunning move that electrifies the NHL offseason, the New York Rangers have officially acquired forward Martin Necas from the Carolina Hurricanes in a high-profile transaction. The dynamic 25-year-old Czech winger brings a fresh burst of energy, speed, and scoring ability to the Rangers lineup, adding serious firepower to an already dangerous team.

The blockbuster deal was finalized Monday morning, with New York sending Braden Schneider, a 2025 first-round pick, and versatile forward Filip Chytil to Carolina in exchange for Necas. The trade reflects the Rangers’ aggressive approach to win-now hockey as they look to return to Stanley Cup contention under head coach Peter Laviolette.

Necas, who notched 24 goals and 29 assists in the 2024-25 season, has steadily developed into one of the NHL’s most reliable two-way forwards. Known for his blazing speed, high hockey IQ, and clutch scoring ability, he adds much-needed versatility and transition play to the Rangers’ offense.

Rangers General Manager Chris Drury praised the acquisition, stating,

> “Martin is an elite talent. He plays with pace, makes players around him better, and competes hard every shift. We believe he’s a perfect fit for what we’re building here in New York.”

Necas, who was drafted 12th overall in 2017 by the Hurricanes, spent six seasons with Carolina, where he earned a reputation for being a game-changer. The Czech forward expressed excitement about joining one of the league’s most iconic franchises.

> “It’s an honor to wear the Rangers jersey,” Necas said in his first team interview. “I’ve always admired the passion of the fans at Madison Square Garden. This is a team with championship potential, and I’m excited to be part of that journey.”

The Rangers have been searching for a consistent top-six winger to pair with Artemi Panarin or Mika Zibanejad. With Necas now in the mix, the forward lines are expected to be more balanced, giving the Rangers a deeper offensive threat. His ability to play both wing and center gives the coaching staff flexibility, especially on the power play and penalty kill.

Two primary reasons behind Necas’ decision to commit to New York, according to sources close to the player, are his desire to play in a major hockey market and his belief in the Rangers’ championship window.

His addition also signals a commitment to speed and modern offensive systems by the Rangers’ front office, as they attempt to evolve their playing style from the gritty, physical identity of the past into a more fast-paced, high-skill game that has become essential in today’s NHL.

Fans have taken to social media in celebration of the signing, with many already imagining a lethal combination of Panarin–Zibanejad–Necas lighting up the scoreboard at the Garden.

Necas is expected to wear #88, the same number he wore with the Hurricanes, and will join the team for offseason training camp in late July. The Rangers are currently finalizing contract extension terms, which are rumored to be in the range of six years at $6.75 million AAV.

With this bold acquisition, the Rangers have made their statement loud and clear: the window to win is now — and with Martin Necas in blue, the path to the Stanley Cup just got a lot more exciting on Broadway.
