The Colorado Avalanche have done it again.

In another jaw-dropping move, the Avalanche have officially signed Norris Trophy finalist Roman Josi, one of the NHL’s most dynamic and respected defensemen. This monumental signing comes just days after the team landed Mitch Marner, showing the front office’s full commitment to building a championship-caliber roster heading into the 2025-26 season.

Josi, 35, had spent his entire NHL career with the Nashville Predators before opting for a new challenge with a Cup-contending squad. He brings a wealth of experience, elite puck-moving skills, and leadership that could prove pivotal in Colorado’s quest for another Stanley Cup.

“This is a huge addition,” said Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland. “Roman is a world-class defenseman who plays massive minutes, runs the power play, and leads by example. Adding him to our group gives us arguably the best defensive core in the league.”

The deal is reported to be a 4-year contract worth $32 million, with an annual cap hit of $8 million. Despite being in his mid-thirties, Josi is still playing at an elite level. Last season, he recorded 71 points (14 goals, 57 assists) in 81 games — ranking among the top-scoring defensemen in the league.

Josi now joins a defensive group that already features Cale Makar, Bowen Byram, and Devon Toews, instantly forming the most feared blue line in the NHL. The Swiss captain is known for his calm under pressure, effortless skating, and offensive creativity. But what often goes unnoticed is his strong positional play and ability to shut down top lines.

“I’ve admired this Colorado group from afar for a long time,” Josi said during his introductory media appearance. “To have the chance to compete for a Cup with this kind of talent — it’s a no-brainer. I’m thrilled to be here and ready to go to work.”

The signing gives head coach Jared Bednar incredible flexibility, as Josi can play in all situations — from anchoring the top power play unit to defending late in tight games. With Josi and Makar possibly rotating as PP1 quarterbacks, opponents will be hard-pressed to contain the Avalanche’s offensive punch.

Former teammates and league insiders have praised the move, with one Western Conference coach calling it “a terrifying combination of speed, intelligence, and experience.”

This signing not only strengthens Colorado’s on-ice presence but adds a veteran voice in the locker room — a critical component as they prepare for another deep playoff run. With the Western Conference becoming increasingly competitive, Josi’s presence provides both stability and star power on the back end.

In just a matter of days, the Avalanche have turned an already dangerous roster into an NHL superteam. With Mitch Marner and Roman Josi both on board, Colorado is sending a clear message to the league:

They’re not just chasing another Stanley Cup — they’re coming for a dynasty.
