NO. 1-RANKED FOOTBALL RECRUIT CHOOSES OHIO STATE OVER TENNESSEE, BYU, AND ALABAMA…

In a major win for the Buckeyes, the No. 1-ranked high school football recruit in the nation has officially committed to Ohio State, stunning rival programs and thrilling fans across the country. The 5-star phenom, Malik Anderson, announced his decision on Wednesday evening during a live ESPN broadcast, choosing the scarlet and gray over powerhouse programs like Tennessee, BYU, and perennial national contender Alabama.

Anderson, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback out of St. John Bosco High School in California, has long been viewed as the crown jewel of the 2025 recruiting class. With a cannon arm, elite mobility, and a high football IQ, he has drawn comparisons to NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes and CJ Stroud. His recruitment has been one of the most followed in recent memory, with top programs making relentless efforts to land his commitment.

“This was the toughest decision of my life,” Anderson said during the televised commitment. “All four schools showed me love and gave me amazing visits. But at the end of the day, I just felt like Ohio State was home. I see myself thriving in that offense, winning championships, and growing as a man both on and off the field.”

The announcement instantly sent shockwaves through the college football world, as Anderson was believed to be leaning toward Tennessee just weeks prior. Alabama, known for producing NFL-ready talent, had made a strong late push, while BYU had also emerged as a surprise finalist after hosting Anderson on an official visit that insiders called “impressive.”

Yet, Ohio State ultimately sealed the deal — thanks in large part to the efforts of head coach Ryan Day and quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis, who had been in regular contact with Anderson since his sophomore year.

🔴 Buckeyes Reloading with Elite Talent

With Anderson now officially on board, Ohio State continues to solidify its status as a national recruiting powerhouse. The Buckeyes already had a top-five 2025 class, and Anderson’s commitment likely pushes them into the No. 1 overall spot, according to most recruiting services.

This marks the third time in the past five recruiting cycles that Ohio State has landed a No. 1 overall recruit, further proving the staff’s ability to attract and develop top-tier talent.

“Malik is a game-changer,” said 247Sports analyst Brandon Huffman. “He can come in and compete early, and he has the maturity, leadership, and raw talent to become the face of a program. Ohio State just got a future Heisman contender.”

Anderson passed for over 4,200 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior, leading his team to a state championship. He also rushed for 800 yards and added 10 scores on the ground. His highlight reels have gone viral multiple times, earning millions of views on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

🟠 Tennessee, Alabama, BYU Left Reeling

For the schools that missed out, Anderson’s commitment is a tough pill to swallow.

Tennessee was thought to be the leader as recently as June, following a strong official visit and a close relationship with offensive coordinator Joey Halzle. Alabama, always in the mix for elite talent, had pitched Anderson on continuing the legacy of quarterbacks like Bryce Young and Tua Tagovailoa. Meanwhile, BYU’s inclusion in the final four had energized Cougar Nation, with hopes that the top recruit would bring new life to their Big 12 future.

Still, none of it was enough to sway Anderson from joining a program known for producing NFL quarterbacks and competing in the College Football Playoff.

🧠 A Calculated Decision

For Anderson, the decision came down to development, exposure, and system fit.

“Coach Day’s offense is everything a quarterback dreams about,” he said. “They’ve produced guys like CJ Stroud, Justin Fields, and Dwayne Haskins. I want to be next.”

His commitment also sends a message to other top recruits, many of whom are expected to follow Anderson’s lead. Early reports suggest Ohio State may now have the inside track on 5-star wide receivers Jaylen Carter and Treyvon Mitchell, both of whom have publicly stated they would love to play alongside Anderson at the next level.

🔜 What’s Next?

Anderson is expected to graduate early and enroll at Ohio State in January 2025. He plans to compete for the starting job immediately and isn’t shying away from the challenge.

“I know there’s competition, but I’m coming to work,” Anderson said. “My goal is to help Ohio State win a national championship and bring that trophy back to Columbus.”

The Buckeye faithful couldn’t be more excited — and as the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on the young star with sky-high expectations and the talent to match.
