In a stunning announcement that has turned heads across the college basketball landscape, Elijah Griffin, the nation’s No. 1-ranked high school basketball recruit, has officially committed to the Michigan State Spartans, spurning elite programs like Duke, Kentucky, and Kansas in the process.

Griffin, a 6-foot-9 forward out of Oak Hill Academy (Virginia), made his decision public during a nationally televised press event Monday afternoon. Considered the most dominant and versatile player in the 2025 class, Griffin brings elite size, skill, and basketball IQ that many scouts compare to a young Kevin Garnett.

> “This wasn’t just about basketball. It was about trust, development, and legacy,” Griffin said. “Coach Izzo has proven for decades that he develops pros. When I visited East Lansing, I felt the energy, the hunger to win, and I saw a system that fits my game perfectly.”

Griffin’s decision is a massive victory for Head Coach Tom Izzo, who continues to defy expectations deep into his career. Landing a player of Griffin’s caliber reaffirms Michigan State’s place among college basketball’s elite, especially after a few seasons outside the Final Four conversation.

According to Griffin’s AAU coach, the decision came down to where he felt most challenged both on and off the court.

> “Elijah is a competitor. He doesn’t want to be handed anything,” said Coach Marcus Bell of Team United. “He wanted a place that would push him to be great, and Michigan State checked every box.”

Griffin averaged 24.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game during his junior year and is known for his ferocious rebounding, defensive versatility, and growing outside shot. His presence gives the Spartans a serious shot at contending for the Big Ten title and making a deep run in March.

The commitment comes as a surprise to many, especially with Duke and Kentucky widely considered the front-runners. Insiders suggest that Griffin’s relationship with Coach Izzo and his emphasis on team culture tipped the scales in Michigan State’s favor.

> “I don’t want to be another piece in a highlight reel program. I want to win the right way, play in a real system, and earn everything,” Griffin added. “Coach Izzo believes in me as a leader.”

This commitment marks Michigan State’s first No. 1 overall recruit since the early 2000s and could have ripple effects on other top players in the class. Griffin has been in close contact with several elite prospects and hinted he might be recruiting a few to join him in East Lansing.

With Griffin now locked in, expectations for the Spartans have skyrocketed. Izzo’s 2025 class looks poised to be one of his best ever, and Spartan fans are already dreaming of another Final Four banner.

As Griffin concluded his announcement, he had one message for the Michigan State faithful:

> “Let’s bring a championship back to East Lansing.”
