Duke Basketball Brightens Day for Kids at Special Practice!…Read More….

Durham, NC – In a heartwarming display of community spirit, the Duke University men’s basketball team hosted a special practice session this week for some very special guests: the young patients and families of Duke Children’s Hospital. The event, filled with laughter, high-fives, and unforgettable moments, gave the children a chance to step into the world of college basketball and create memories that will last a lifetime.

The day began with the Duke players welcoming the children and their families to the Cameron Indoor Stadium, transforming the normally intense training environment into a fun-filled playground. From shooting hoops alongside their basketball heroes to learning basic dribbling techniques, the young guests were treated like VIPs. Coaches and players alike emphasized encouragement and fun over competition, making sure every child felt included and celebrated.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Coach Jon Scheyer. “We work hard on the court, but it’s equally important to give back to our community and show these kids that they are a part of our Duke family. Seeing their smiles and excitement reminds us why we play this game.”

For many of the children, the experience went beyond basketball. Some had the chance to tour the locker rooms, take team photos, and even receive signed jerseys and basketballs from their favorite players. The joy on their faces was evident, with one young fan exclaiming, “I can’t believe I just played with the Duke players! This is the best day ever!”

Players were equally touched by the event. Senior guard and team captain expressed how inspiring it was to see the children’s courage and enthusiasm. “These kids are incredible,” he said. “Spending time with them puts everything into perspective. They show us what true strength and resilience look like, and it motivates us to be better both on and off the court.”

The event also highlighted the ongoing partnership between Duke Athletics and Duke Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, the basketball program participates in various initiatives aimed at supporting patients and families, from hospital visits to fundraising events. This practice session is one of the many ways the team aims to make a positive impact on the lives of children facing medical challenges.

Parents and guardians expressed their gratitude, noting how such experiences lift the spirits of their children and provide moments of joy during difficult times. One parent shared, “Seeing my child laugh and play with their favorite players was truly unforgettable. It’s not just a day of basketball—it’s a day of hope and happiness.”

As the event concluded, the children waved goodbye, their smiles reflecting the special memories they had created. For the Duke basketball team, it was a reminder that the impact of the sport goes far beyond wins and losses. By sharing their time, energy, and passion, the players left a lasting impression on the children, proving once again that basketball has the power to bring communities together.

Indeed, this was another unforgettable day for Duke Basketball and its youngest fans—a celebration of joy, resilience, and the enduring bond between the team and the children of Duke Children’s Hospital.
