Max Verstappen Responds Firmly to Lewis Hamilton’s Accusation of Penalty ‘Double Standards’***
Formula 1 star Max Verstappen has fired back at rival Lewis Hamilton’s recent claims of “double standards” following a controversial penalty decision that reignited debate over consistency in F1 race officiating. The reigning world champion made it clear that he was unfazed by the criticism and insisted that the stewards’ call was justified, setting off another round of heated exchanges between fans of the two title contenders.
The drama began after last weekend’s Grand Prix, where Verstappen was handed a time penalty for a racing incident involving another driver. Hamilton, who has long been outspoken on issues of fairness and transparency in Formula 1, suggested that Verstappen might have been treated more leniently compared to others in similar situations—comments that quickly drew reactions from across the motorsport world.
However, Verstappen was quick to address the comments head-on. Speaking to reporters ahead of the following race weekend, the Red Bull driver made his stance crystal clear.
> “I don’t really pay attention to what Lewis says anymore,” Verstappen said with a calm but firm tone. “Everyone has their own opinion, but at the end of the day, I race the way I always have—hard but fair. The stewards make their decisions, not me. I don’t see any double standards.”
Verstappen went on to explain that incidents like these are part of racing and that every driver faces penalties or warnings throughout their careers.
> “Sometimes you’re on the wrong end of a call, sometimes you’re not. That’s just how it goes. But to say there are double standards, I don’t agree with that,” he added.
Hamilton’s comments came after he questioned the FIA’s consistency in enforcing penalties, implying that Verstappen’s aggressive racing style might have been overlooked on certain occasions while others faced harsher treatment.
> “It’s about consistency,” Hamilton said post-race. “There have been times when I or others have received penalties for much less. I think the FIA has to look into whether the rules are being applied equally.”
The latest tension between the two champions is reminiscent of their fiery 2021 title battle, which was filled with controversial collisions, penalties, and differing interpretations of the rulebook. Though both drivers have taken different paths since that season—Hamilton chasing a record-breaking eighth world title and Verstappen dominating recent championships—the competitive rivalry between them continues to simmer.
Fans and analysts were quick to react to the latest exchange. Social media lit up with debates over whether Hamilton had a point, while Verstappen supporters defended the Dutch driver’s record and approach. Some fans agreed with Hamilton’s frustration, arguing that the FIA has been inconsistent in applying penalties, while others felt his comments were unnecessary given Verstappen’s clean record in recent races.
Former F1 driver and commentator Jenson Button weighed in on the matter, offering a more balanced perspective.
> “Both Max and Lewis have valid points,” Button said on Sky Sports. “Racing incidents are always tricky to judge, and consistency is something the FIA is constantly trying to improve. But I think Max is right—he can’t control what the stewards decide. He just drives.”
Behind the scenes, the FIA has reportedly reviewed its penalty decisions this season and maintains that each ruling is made based on evidence, telemetry, and video footage. A spokesperson for the governing body stated that there was no favoritism toward any driver or team.
> “The FIA’s race stewards evaluate every incident independently,” the spokesperson said. “There are no double standards. Each decision is based on the facts presented during the race and the rules outlined in the sporting code.”
Despite the controversy, Verstappen appeared unbothered by the noise. Known for his laser focus, the Dutch driver turned his attention back to the championship standings, where he continues to lead comfortably. His composure, even amid criticism from one of his fiercest rivals, highlights his evolution from a fiery young talent to a mature, calculated racer.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner also defended his driver, calling the criticism unwarranted.
> “Max races hard, but he races fair,” Horner said. “Every driver has their own style, and Max’s aggression is part of what makes him special. The stewards reviewed the incident thoroughly and made their decision. It’s time to move on and focus on the racing.”
Hamilton, meanwhile, maintained that his comments weren’t personal but rather aimed at promoting fairness in the sport.
> “It’s not about Max,” Hamilton clarified later in an interview. “It’s about the sport being transparent. I have a lot of respect for Max and what he’s achieved, but I just want to make sure that the rules are applied equally across the board.”
Even so, the exchange between the two has once again captured global attention. Fans have been quick to note how, even years after their epic title showdown, Hamilton and Verstappen continue to dominate headlines whenever controversy strikes.
As the season progresses, both drivers will look to put the distractions behind them. Verstappen remains the heavy favorite to secure another championship, while Hamilton and Mercedes continue to develop their car in hopes of closing the gap. Still, the intensity of their rivalry—rooted in mutual respect but fueled by competitive fire—remains one of Formula 1’s most compelling storylines.
Whether or not the FIA adjusts its processes following Hamilton’s comments remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Max Verstappen isn’t backing down from criticism, and his response serves as a reminder that he’s focused solely on performance, not politics.
As Verstappen put it best,
> “People can say what they want, but at the end of the day, the stopwatch never lies. That’s what matters to me.”
