Viktor Gyokeres seals Sweden’s place at 2026 World Cup with late winner
Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres scored a dramatic late winner as Sweden edged past Poland 3-2 to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday. The playoff final was a thrilling encounter, with momentum swinging between both sides. Anthony Elanga gave Sweden the lead, only for Nicola Zalewski to equalize for Poland, before Gustaf Lagerbielke restored Sweden’s advantage just before halftime. Poland struck back early in the second half through Karol Swiderski, setting up a tense finale that Gyokeres ultimately decided.
The victory caps an impressive turnaround for Sweden, who overcame a challenging qualifying campaign to reach the playoffs via their Nations League ranking. Under head coach Graham Potter, they successfully navigated the knockout stage, defeating Ukraine in the semi-finals before toppling Poland in the final.
For Poland, the defeat ends their World Cup hopes in disappointment. Despite twice coming from behind, Robert Lewandowski and his side were undone by defensive errors and missed chances.
