What Leicester City Received for Trey Nyoni as Liverpool Transfer Fee Confirmed

Leicester City secured less than £1 million from the 2023 departure of academy midfielder Trey Nyoni to Liverpool, it has been confirmed, despite the player’s subsequent rapid rise at Anfield.

Nyoni left the King Power Stadium three years ago to join Liverpool’s youth setup. Because of his age at the time, a compensation fee was due to be determined by an independent tribunal. According to The Athletic, Liverpool ultimately paid just under £1 million for his services.

The 19-year-old has since made 31 first-team appearances for the Premier League side, including 11 this season. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola recently spoke positively about the teenager’s progress.

“Trey just has to continue in the same way as since the beginning of pre-season, be ready for all of the games,” Iraola said. “We trust him, he’s doing very well. We have to encourage him to continue learning, improving and getting experience. But he’s in a very good place.”

Nyoni is understood to be close to agreeing a new contract with Liverpool. The development comes months after the club rejected a £30 million bid from Nottingham Forest for the midfielder.

Reflecting on Nyoni’s early potential, former Leicester loan manager and academy coach Guy Branston said in 2024 that the player’s ability was evident from a young age.

“He was already playing up and being highlighted as a serious player,” Branston said. “I was asked to work with the U13s and U12s, to work with the coaches, to give them an idea of what the next PDP (Player Development Plan) would look like as a coach, so I worked with his manager at the time.

“Stuart McClarty was asking me to work with him regarding what the potential stage would look like in a few more years for these boys. Trey was involved in that group over a period of time. You’re watching him train at the training ground and you’re getting wind that he’s a super talent.

“You’re watching him play up and he’s still flagging up. Then since I’ve left, he’s stepped into the U16s and U18s and then watched him around the England set-up as well.”

Nyoni is expected to feature more regularly for Liverpool in the coming months, beginning with Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Fenerbahce. For Leicester, the modest compensation received stands in contrast to the midfielder’s subsequent development and market value.
