In a major win for Rick Barnes and the Tennessee Volunteers, 5-star power forward KJ Evans Jr. has officially committed to play for the Vols, delivering one of the biggest recruiting hauls in recent program history. The Montverde Academy (FL) standout and current Oregon Ducks freshman will transfer to Knoxville, immediately elevating Tennessee’s frontcourt talent and national expectations heading into the next season.

A Nationally Coveted Talent

KJ Evans, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward, was ranked among the top 15 prospects in the 2023 recruiting class and drew heavy attention from programs such as Kentucky, Kansas, and Alabama before initially committing to Oregon. After one season with the Ducks, where he averaged 7.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and showcased his elite versatility on both ends, Evans entered the transfer portal — and the Vols pounced.

Coach Rick Barnes, long praised for developing high-level talent, made Evans a top priority. His ability to play inside and out, defend multiple positions, and run the floor fits perfectly into Tennessee’s system.

Why Tennessee?

In a statement released on social media, Evans cited two major reasons for his commitment:

> “Coach Barnes has a proven track record of preparing players for the next level, and Tennessee’s fan base is second to none. I want to compete for championships, and I believe the Vols give me that chance.”

His decision comes at a pivotal time for the program. With former stars like Dalton Knecht moving on to the NBA, the Vols were in need of a frontcourt presence who could lead on both ends. Evans is expected to step into a starting role immediately.

Impact on the 2025 Season

Evans’ addition gives Tennessee one of the most balanced and athletic lineups in the SEC. Alongside returning guards Zakai Zeigler and Jordan Gainey, the Vols now boast a core that can compete not just in the conference but nationally.

College basketball insiders are already calling Evans one of the biggest gets of the offseason. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello noted:

> “KJ Evans is a game-changer for Tennessee. His mobility, size, and defensive instincts will allow Coach Barnes to run a more up-tempo style and create matchup nightmares for opponents.”

A Program on the Rise

Under Barnes, Tennessee has made consistent NCAA Tournament appearances and continues to attract top-tier talent. The signing of Evans solidifies the Vols as an elite destination for blue-chip recruits, especially those looking for development and high-level competition.

With Evans in the fold, Tennessee not only fills a critical need but also makes a statement: the Vols are aiming for a Final Four run.
