The Detroit Lions have made a major statement in free agency, announcing the signing of veteran star cornerback Stephon Gilmore to a one-year, $9 million contract, as the team continues to solidify its defense for a Super Bowl run in the 2025 season.

Gilmore, a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and five-time Pro Bowler, brings elite experience and proven leadership to a young and hungry Detroit defense. The move adds another piece to a Lions team that finished last season as NFC North champions and just one game short of a Super Bowl appearance.

General manager Brad Holmes confirmed the signing on Monday morning, calling it “a critical addition” to Detroit’s secondary.

“Stephon brings exactly what we want — high-level play, leadership, and a championship mentality,” Holmes said. “We believe his presence will elevate everyone in that locker room.”

At 33 years old, Gilmore is no longer in his prime, but he’s coming off a strong season with the Dallas Cowboys where he recorded 68 tackles, 13 pass breakups, and 2 interceptions, while starting all 17 games. His ability to match up with elite receivers and make smart plays in critical moments remains elite — something the Lions lacked in their injury-plagued secondary last season.

Head coach Dan Campbell emphasized how much Gilmore’s mindset fits the culture he’s built in Detroit.

“This guy’s a dog. He knows how to win, how to lead, and how to fight through anything,” Campbell said. “We’re not bringing in names — we’re bringing in players. And Stephon Gilmore is still a damn good player.”

The Lions are clearly going all-in. Already boasting a top-tier offense led by Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a powerful O-line, the front office has turned its attention to the defensive side this offseason. Adding Gilmore alongside rising stars like Brian Branch, Aidan Hutchinson, and Jack Campbell makes the unit that much more dangerous.

Gilmore will likely start opposite Terrion Arnold, the Lions’ 2024 first-round draft pick, giving Detroit a perfect blend of youth and experience in the secondary. For Gilmore, the decision was as much about fit as it was about football.

“I want to win, and this team is built to win,” Gilmore said in a statement. “I’ve played against the Lions — I’ve seen the toughness, the fire, and now I get to be part of it. Let’s go get it.”

Fans were quick to celebrate the signing, with hashtags like #GilmoreToTheD and #RestoreTheRoar trending shortly after the news broke. The city of Detroit, already energized by the team’s deep playoff run, now has even more reason to believe the time is now.

With Stephon Gilmore in Honolulu blue, the Lions just got a little louder — and a whole lot tougher.
