The Edmonton Oilers have made a significant splash in NHL free agency, officially signing veteran forward Max Domi to a three-year deal worth $12.5 million. The team announced the deal early Tuesday morning, stating that the addition of Domi was aimed at bolstering the team’s forward depth, adding playoff experience, and injecting energy into the bottom six.

Domi, 30, is coming off a productive season with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he tallied 47 points (13 goals, 34 assists) in 78 games. Known for his versatility, high motor, and gritty playing style, Domi can play both center and wing, giving the Oilers some much-needed flexibility on their third and fourth lines.

The deal marks a return to the Western Conference for Domi, who previously played with the Arizona Coyotes and Dallas Stars earlier in his career. He joins an Edmonton team that came agonizingly close to hoisting the Stanley Cup in 2025 but ultimately fell short in the Final. Domi is expected to bring veteran leadership, tenacity, and an edge that the Oilers believe could push them over the top next season.

In his introductory press conference, Domi cited two major reasons for committing to Edmonton.

“First off, this is a team that’s right on the cusp of greatness. You look at Connor [McDavid], Leon [Draisaitl], and that whole core—it’s special. I want to win, and I truly believe this is the place to do it,” Domi said. “Secondly, I’ve always admired the passion of this fanbase. Playing at Rogers Place, in front of those fans, wearing that Oilers jersey… it’s something I’ve always dreamed of.”

Domi, the son of former NHL enforcer Tie Domi, brings a fiery presence to the ice that complements Edmonton’s high-octane style. Despite being undersized at 5’10”, he is never afraid to engage physically and has proven to be a capable contributor in key moments, particularly during playoff runs.

General Manager Ken Holland praised the signing as a critical move to improve the team’s secondary scoring and overall toughness.

“Max brings a unique blend of skill, grit, and experience that we believe can make a difference come playoff time,” Holland said. “He’s the type of player who hates to lose, and that mentality fits perfectly with where we’re headed as a franchise.”

The signing also comes at a pivotal moment for Edmonton, as the team looks to maintain its championship window while managing cap space and pending free agents. Domi’s cap hit of just over $4 million annually is considered a fair market value, particularly for a player of his pedigree and intangibles.

With Domi now in the fold, the Oilers are expected to continue fine-tuning their roster. Whether he slots in as a center or winger, on the third line or second power play unit, one thing is clear: Max Domi is ready to make his mark in Oil Country.
