Breaking: Her unexpected 70th birthday bash almost caused Gayle King a heart attack, according to Oprah

The 70th birthday surprise that Oprah planned for her closest friend Gayle King was so perfect that the “CBS Mornings” co-host thought she was going to have a heart attack.

Oprah tricked King into attending a holiday dinner at the Ci Siamo restaurant in New York City on Friday night. The TV journalist had no idea that her enormous birthday party was just around the corner.

On Saturday, the two friends shared an Instagram video that captured King’s reaction to the big announcement. King threw her handbag on the bar as she stumbled backwards, her fist clenching her chest in disbelief, at seeing the mob gathering for her.

Oprah said in the caption that in order to keep the celebration a secret, the organizers had to tell King lies and make up stories. “Happy birthday, @gayleking! I’m so sorry we nearly killed you.”

Partygoers included Niecy Nash-Betts, Robin Roberts, Katy Perry, Robert De Niro, David Oyelowo, Stephen Colbert, Brooke Shields, and Dave Chappelle, among many more.

King responded to the unexpected turn of events by writing on Instagram that she was “still floating” after the celebrations.
