In a bold move aimed at injecting speed, skill, and youth into their forward group, the New York Rangers have acquired 25-year-old forward Martin Necas from the Carolina Hurricanes. The blockbuster trade, announced early Thursday morning, is already being hailed as one of the most impactful deals of the NHL offseason.

In exchange, the Rangers sent promising young defenseman Braden Schneider, a 2025 second-round draft pick, and a conditional 2026 pick to the Hurricanes. New York will also receive a 2025 fourth-round pick along with Necas.

Necas, a restricted free agent this offseason, is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Rangers imminently. Negotiations have reportedly been ongoing for weeks behind the scenes, with both sides agreeing to terms shortly before the trade was finalized. According to sources close to the deal, Necas is set to ink a five-year contract worth roughly $6 million annually.

Rangers general manager Chris Drury expressed excitement about the acquisition:

> “Martin brings the kind of pace and creativity that complements our top six perfectly. He’s proven he can play in all situations, and we believe he’ll thrive under Peter Laviolette’s system. This is a major step forward for us.”

Necas had a solid campaign with the Hurricanes last season, registering 24 goals and 29 assists for 53 points in 77 games. While slightly down from his breakout 71-point season in 2022-23, his dynamic playmaking and versatility remained evident throughout the year. He can play both wing and center and has been praised for his two-way awareness and ability to drive offense in transition.

The Czech native is expected to slot in on the Rangers’ second line alongside Vincent Trocheck and Artemi Panarin, giving New York one of the most dangerous offensive trios in the Eastern Conference. His addition also gives the Rangers much-needed depth on the power play and another option in shootout scenarios.

Fans in New York have already taken to social media to express their approval, with some calling Necas the missing piece the Rangers needed to finally get past the Eastern Conference Finals. Others are simply excited to see his speed and flair light up Madison Square Garden.

The Hurricanes, on their end, add a reliable young blueliner in Braden Schneider, who was often stuck behind Jacob Trouba and Adam Fox in New York. Carolina’s depth on defense was tested in the playoffs, and Schneider gives them long-term stability. The picks also give them future flexibility in a deep 2025 draft.

Necas, speaking briefly to reporters, said he was “thrilled” to join an Original Six team with Stanley Cup aspirations.

> “It’s a dream to play in a market like New York. I can’t wait to get started.”

With this move, the Rangers signal they are all-in on winning now, loading up their roster with top-end talent while still preserving their young core. With Necas on board, New York just got a lot more dangerous.
