Breaking: On the now-viral TikTok video, the pilot clarifies that airplane mode “is not a conspiracy.”
Even though it’s unlikely that disabling airplane mode on your phone will cause the plane to crash, it’s still safer to do it before takeoff.
Nonetheless, it’s more probable that it will merely impede the pilots’ ability to communicate with the control tower, which is also undesirable.
You can imagine the sound it would make if you put your phone close to a speaker and then got a text message. While flying through a congested airport with limited clearances, even a small amount of signal interference might make pilots ask controllers to repeat themselves, which in turn causes delays or worse.
One pilot even went so far as to utilize TikTok to beg passengers to use it every time they flew.
