In a jaw-dropping free agency move that’s sending shockwaves across the NHL, the Edmonton Oilers have officially signed veteran superstar Steven Stamkos to a multi-year deal, aiming to supercharge their Stanley Cup ambitions alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Stamkos, the 34-year-old former Tampa Bay Lightning captain, brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and firepower to an already electric Oilers lineup. After spending his entire career with the Lightning—winning two Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021 and tallying over 1,000 career points—Stamkos hits the ice in Alberta with one goal in mind: lifting the Cup one more time.

“I’ve had an incredible journey in Tampa, but the opportunity to join this core in Edmonton, with the best player in the world in McDavid and a championship-ready squad, was something I couldn’t turn down,” Stamkos said during his introductory press conference Monday morning. “I believe this team is on the verge of greatness, and I want to be a part of that.”

Oilers general manager Ken Holland called the acquisition a “statement of intent.”

“Steven’s record speaks for itself—he’s one of the most respected leaders in the game and still an elite offensive force,” said Holland. “Adding him to our top six and power play unit gives us another dimension offensively and helps balance our attack.”

Known for his deadly one-timer, especially on the power play, Stamkos has scored 40+ goals in a season six times and has consistently maintained his production even as he’s aged. With the Oilers already boasting the league’s top power play, the addition of Stamkos is expected to make it nearly unstoppable.

Fans have taken to social media in celebration, calling it “a dream signing” and “the missing piece” to finally bring the Cup back to Edmonton for the first time since 1990.

Head coach Kris Knoblauch is equally excited about the team’s new weapon.

“Stammer’s presence on the ice and in the room can’t be overstated. He’s the kind of player who makes everyone around him better, and I think the chemistry between him, McDavid, and Draisaitl could be truly special.”

It’s also worth noting Stamkos’ experience and leadership could be vital during the playoffs, an area where the Oilers have struggled to push through the final hurdle in recent years. His voice in the locker room could offer the guidance needed for the younger players to stay composed during high-pressure moments.

The deal is reportedly worth $18 million over three years, with incentives tied to playoff performance and games played, showing the Oilers’ commitment to both performance and longevity.

As the 2025–26 season approaches, all eyes will be on Edmonton. With Stamkos now joining McDavid and Draisaitl, the Oilers aren’t just chasing the Cup—they’re demanding it.
