Dominance Defined: Duke Recognized as No. 1 Program in CBS Sports’ 25-Year Basketball Rankings…Read More….

For the past quarter century, college basketball has witnessed thrilling rivalries, iconic players, and programs rising and falling in the pursuit of greatness. But one school, according to a new comprehensive ranking by CBS Sports, has stood above them all—Duke University.

The Blue Devils were officially crowned the No. 1 basketball program of the last 25 years, earning the top spot in CBS Sports’ evaluation of consistency, championships, and overall dominance. The ranking looked beyond single seasons of success, weighing national titles, Final Four appearances, win totals, and recruiting impact since 1999.

Duke’s resume speaks for itself. Over the past 25 years, the Blue Devils have claimed three national championships (2001, 2010, 2015), reached six Final Fours, and produced countless NBA stars. Even after the retirement of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski in 2022, the program has continued to thrive under Jon Scheyer, proving that Duke’s culture of excellence extends far beyond a single figure.

“Duke has been the standard-bearer for what sustained success looks like in college basketball,” CBS Sports wrote in its breakdown. “From the floor to the recruiting trail, the Blue Devils’ ability to adapt while remaining elite is unmatched.”

Other powerhouse programs made the top five, including Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, and UConn—each with their own claim to greatness. Yet, what separates Duke, analysts argue, is its remarkable balance of consistency and peak achievement. Unlike programs that had shorter dynastic runs, the Blue Devils have remained nationally relevant nearly every year, rarely experiencing down seasons.

Beyond the numbers, Duke’s impact on basketball culture has been profound. From producing household names like Kyrie Irving, Zion Williamson, and Jayson Tatum, to building a “brotherhood” that connects past and present players, the program has built an identity that resonates beyond Durham. That cultural impact factored heavily into CBS Sports’ methodology, which aimed to measure influence as much as wins.

For current head coach Jon Scheyer, being recognized as the top program of the era is both a celebration of Duke’s past and a challenge for its future. “This honor reflects the hard work of everyone who has worn the jersey and represented Duke Basketball,” Scheyer said in a statement. “Our job now is to continue that tradition, to build on it, and to ensure that the next 25 years are even greater.”

Fans across the country are unlikely to debate Duke’s greatness without some resistance. Programs like Connecticut, with five national titles since 1999, or Kansas, with its unmatched regular-season consistency, will continue to make their case. Still, Duke’s ability to combine tournament success, star power, and lasting cultural influence ultimately pushed them to the top of CBS Sports’ list.

In the end, the recognition is less about ranking numbers and more about confirming what many already believed: Duke basketball has defined the modern era of college hoops.
