The Edmonton Oilers have made a major move in free agency, signing veteran defenseman Brett Pesce to a multi-year contract, signaling the franchise’s continued commitment to strengthening its blue line and pushing for a Stanley Cup.

General Manager Ken Holland announced the signing early Wednesday morning, confirming that Pesce, formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes, has agreed to a five-year deal worth $27.5 million, carrying an average annual value of $5.5 million.

“This is a significant addition to our roster,” said Holland during a press conference at Rogers Place. “Brett is a proven, reliable two-way defenseman who brings experience, leadership, and a strong defensive presence. We believe he will fit seamlessly into our system and provide a stabilizing force on our back end.”

At 29 years old, Pesce brings eight seasons of NHL experience and a reputation as one of the most dependable right-shot defenders in the league. With Carolina, he played a key role in their rise to perennial playoff contention, logging heavy minutes against top opponents and contributing to both penalty-kill and even-strength play. He recorded 5 goals and 16 assists in 70 games last season, along with a +11 rating.

The Oilers’ defense has often been seen as the missing piece in their Stanley Cup aspirations. With offensive firepower led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, bolstering the back end has become a priority for a team looking to capitalize on its championship window. Pesce is expected to slide into the top four, likely paired with Darnell Nurse or Mattias Ekholm, depending on coaching strategy.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch expressed excitement about the new addition. “Brett plays the kind of hockey that wins games in May and June,” said Knoblauch. “He makes the right decisions under pressure, skates well, and knows how to shut down elite players. We’re thrilled to welcome him into the room.”

Pesce himself was enthusiastic about the move to Edmonton. “This is a team that’s right there, knocking on the door,” he told reporters via Zoom. “It’s an honor to join a group with such talent and determination. I can’t wait to get to work and help bring a championship to Oil Country.”

Fans have reacted positively on social media, with many praising the Oilers for finally landing a solid, top-four defenseman with playoff pedigree. With the team reaching the Stanley Cup Final this past season but falling just short, expectations are even higher going into the 2025 campaign.

As the free agency period continues, all eyes will be on Edmonton’s next moves. But one thing is clear: with the addition of Brett Pesce, the Oilers have taken a firm step forward in their quest for hockey’s ultimate prize.
