EAST LANSING, Mich. — In a move that has thrilled the Michigan State basketball faithful, a former fan favorite is making his way back to the program — this time, not as a player, but as a mentor and leader. Michigan State University has announced the appointment of Mateen Cleaves as the new Director of Player Leadership and Development, bringing one of the program’s most iconic figures back into the fold.

Cleaves, who led the Spartans to the 2000 NCAA Championship and remains one of the most beloved players in the history of the program, will now play a key role off the court. His new position will focus on mentoring student-athletes, cultivating leadership qualities, and helping guide young players through the challenges of college basketball and life beyond it.

Known for his fiery passion, team-first mentality, and deep bond with head coach Tom Izzo, Cleaves’ return marks a significant moment for Michigan State basketball.

“It feels like coming home,” Cleaves said during Monday’s press conference. “Michigan State isn’t just a school to me — it’s family. This is where I became a man, where I learned how to lead, and where I built relationships that changed my life.”

When asked what led to his decision to return to the program, Cleaves cited two major reasons.

“First, I believe in Coach Izzo’s vision now more than ever,” he said. “He’s still building something special, and I want to be part of it — not from the stands, but right there in the locker room, helping these young men grow.”

He continued, “Second, I’ve seen how important mentorship is in today’s game. Players are facing more pressure than ever, and I know from experience how much it means to have someone in your corner who’s been through it. I want to be that person for them.”

Cleaves’ new role is part of a broader initiative within the program to strengthen leadership and life skills for student-athletes. His experience — both as a former NCAA champion and professional player — makes him uniquely suited for the role.

Tom Izzo, who coached Cleaves during MSU’s championship run, expressed enthusiasm over the reunion.

“Mateen has always been a Spartan at heart. His energy, passion, and wisdom are exactly what our players need,” said Izzo. “He’s lived what they’re living, and he understands what it takes to win — not just games, but in life.”

Cleaves will begin his duties immediately, joining the team during offseason workouts and participating in recruiting and leadership development efforts.
