Former Florida Gators Head Coach Ron Zook Dies at 70

April 12, 2025 — Gainesville, FL

Ron Zook, former head coach of the Florida Gators football team, has passed away at the age of 70. Known for his energetic leadership and deep passion for the game, Zook’s death has sent waves of mourning through the college football world.

Zook coached the Florida Gators from 2002 to 2004, taking over after the legendary Steve Spurrier. Though his tenure was met with mixed results on the field, Zook was praised for his recruiting efforts, having brought in a number of talented players who would later contribute to the team’s 2006 national championship under Urban Meyer.

Prior to his head coaching role at Florida, Zook served as a defensive coordinator and assistant across multiple programs, including the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers. After his time in Gainesville, he went on to coach at the University of Illinois and most recently worked in support roles at Maryland and in the XFL.

Tributes have poured in from former players, colleagues, and fans, all recognizing Zook not only for his contributions to football, but also for his mentorship and dedication to developing young athletes.

“He cared about his players like they were his own,” said one former Florida player. “Coach Zook helped shape who I am on and off the field.”

The cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed. Zook is survived by his wife and children.

Plans for a public memorial or service are expected to be announced in the coming days.
