East Lansing, MI — July 4, 2025 — In a move that blends leadership, legacy, and long-term vision, Michigan State University has officially announced the appointment of former star quarterback Aidan Chiles as an assistant coach on the Spartans football staff. The announcement marks a pivotal moment in both Chiles’ career and the future of MSU’s football program under head coach Jonathan Smith.
Chiles, who made national headlines as a dynamic and promising quarterback after transferring from Oregon State, played a central role in revitalizing the Spartans’ offense during the 2024 season. His on-field performance, leadership qualities, and commitment to the Spartan program quickly made him a fan favorite and a respected figure in the locker room.
Now, as he trades his helmet for a headset, Chiles is set to guide the next wave of Spartan athletes with the same energy and intelligence that defined his playing career.
“It’s truly an honor to step into this role,” Chiles said during Friday’s press conference. “Michigan State has given me so much—from trust to opportunity—and I want to give back by helping build the kind of program young athletes can be proud of. I may not be taking snaps anymore, but I’ll be in the trenches every day, mentoring, teaching, and pushing this team forward.”
Head coach Jonathan Smith, who previously coached Chiles at Oregon State and brought him to East Lansing, expressed his full confidence in the appointment.
“Aidan’s leadership is rare, and his understanding of the game—especially at his age—is elite,” Smith said. “He’s someone who leads with authenticity, knows how to connect with players, and understands the system inside and out. Adding him to our staff is a tremendous asset as we build a competitive and sustainable program.”
Chiles is expected to serve as an offensive assistant, with responsibilities ranging from quarterback development to film analysis and player mentorship. While young by coaching standards, his recent playing experience offers a unique advantage, particularly when bridging the generational gap between athletes and staff.
Former teammates took to social media to express support and excitement for Chiles’ new role. Star running back Nate Carter tweeted, “No one better to help lead this squad. Coach Chiles is about to be special.” Defensive lineman Maverick Hansen echoed the sentiment, “Smart move by the staff. Aidan’s leadership was unmatched in the locker room.”
The appointment is part of a broader initiative at MSU to elevate homegrown leadership and invest in the development of young coaching talent. Athletic Director Jennifer Smith noted that the university is focused on building a football culture where former players have opportunities to contribute beyond their years on the field.
As the Spartans gear up for fall camp and prepare for what is expected to be a highly competitive Big Ten season, the addition of Chiles to the coaching roster sends a clear message: Michigan State is investing in its people—and its future.
For Aidan Chiles, the jersey may be hung up, but his journey with the Spartans is far from over. It’s only just beginning—on the sidelines, in the meeting rooms, and in the hearts of the players he will soon lead.
