Former Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tuberville Dies at 70

April 12, 2025 — Auburn, AL

Tommy Tuberville, the former head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders and longtime figure in college football, has passed away at the age of 70. The news was confirmed early Saturday morning by his family, who said he died peacefully at his home in Alabama.

Tuberville, who coached at Texas Tech from 2010 to 2012, was widely respected for his leadership, football intellect, and ability to build strong programs. His coaching career also included notable stints at Ole Miss, Auburn, and Cincinnati.

Beyond the sidelines, Tuberville made headlines for his move into politics, being elected as a U.S. Senator from Alabama in 2020. He brought the same competitive drive and strong opinions to Washington that he showed on the football field.

In a statement, Texas Tech Athletics said, “Coach Tuberville’s impact on our program and college football as a whole is immeasurable. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

Tributes have poured in from former players, colleagues, and fans, all remembering Tuberville as a passionate leader and mentor who left a lasting legacy in both sports and public service.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
