Guyana’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the incident, stating that the soldiers were ambushed by a group of armed men, believed to be Venezuelan nationals.

“The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is investigating the incident and working closely with Venezuelan authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry.

The incident has raised tensions between the two countries, which have a long-standing border dispute.
