*GUYANA’S DARKEST DAY: Demerara Bridge Collapse Claims 231 Lives, Injures Hundreds More*

Georgetown, Guyana – In one of the deadliest disasters to hit Guyana in recent memory, the Demerara Bridge collapsed yesterday evening, claiming the lives of 231 people and injuring hundreds more.

The tragedy occurred at approximately 8:45pm local time, when a section of the bridge suddenly gave way, sending vehicles plummeting into the Demerara River below. Eyewitnesses described the scene as “apocalyptic,” with screams and cries for help filling the air.

“I was driving across the bridge when I heard a loud cracking sound,” said survivor, Nadia Singh. “The next thing I knew, I was underwater, fighting for my life.”

Rescue efforts were launched immediately, with emergency responders and volunteers racing against time to save those trapped in the wreckage. However, the sheer scale of the disaster soon became apparent, and the death toll continued to rise throughout the night.

“This is a dark day for Guyana,” said President Irfaan Ali, who visited the scene of the disaster early this morning. “We are in shock and mourning, but we will do everything in our power to support the families of the victims and to rebuild our nation.”

The cause of the bridge collapse is still unknown, but officials have launched an investigation into the disaster. The Demerara Bridge, which spans the Demerara River, is a major transportation artery in Guyana, connecting the capital city of Georgetown to the rest of the country.

As the nation comes to terms with the scale of the tragedy, Guyanese from all walks of life are rallying to support the victims and their families. A national day of mourning has been declared, and a fund has been established to support those affected by the disaster.
