ICONIC VOICE: Michigan State Athletics Officially Honors Hall of Fame Broadcaster George Blaha…Read More….

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Some people write history with trophies. Some with banners. But a rare few write it with love, loyalty, and a voice that echoes through generations. For Michigan State University, that voice has always belonged to one man — the legendary George Blaha.

This week, Michigan State Athletics officially honored Blaha, celebrating more than five decades of iconic broadcasts, unforgettable calls, and unwavering dedication to Spartan sports. Known simply as “The Voice of the Spartans,” Blaha’s influence reaches far beyond the press box. He didn’t just narrate games — he shaped memories.

Blaha’s journey began in the early 1970s, when a young broadcaster with unmistakable enthusiasm joined the Michigan State family. Over the years, his calls became the soundtrack of Spartan victories, heartbreaks, and history-making moments. Whether it was a game-winning touchdown or a buzzer-beating basket, his voice carried the emotion of an entire community.

In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Breslin Center, Michigan State unveiled a special tribute recognizing Blaha’s impact — a permanent installation honoring his legacy and contribution to Spartan athletics. Surrounded by former players, coaches, colleagues, and fans, Blaha received a standing ovation that lasted nearly five minutes.

“George Blaha isn’t just a broadcaster,” said Michigan State Athletic Director Alan Haller. “He’s part of our DNA. He’s been there through every era — through triumphs, through challenges — always representing what it means to be a Spartan with class, passion, and integrity.”

Known for his distinctive baritone and genuine enthusiasm, Blaha called countless iconic moments — from Spartan basketball’s championship runs under Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo to thrilling football seasons that defined generations. His signature phrases — “Touchdown, MSU!” and “Count it, baby!” — have become woven into the fabric of Spartan tradition.

Blaha’s humility remains one of his defining traits. Accepting the honor, he spoke not about his own career, but about the players, fans, and university he’s loved for over 50 years. “I’ve been blessed to tell the story of Michigan State,” Blaha said. “The real stars are the athletes who give their all and the fans who never stop believing. This honor is for all of you.”

Teammates, athletes, and fans flooded social media with tributes, sharing personal stories of listening to Blaha on cold Saturday afternoons or late March nights. Many described how his voice felt like “home,” a constant presence through generations of Spartan fans.

Tom Izzo, Michigan State’s Hall of Fame basketball coach, summed it up best: “When you think of Michigan State, you think of George Blaha. His voice is Spartan pride. His heart is pure green.”

As Michigan State celebrates its greatest icons, George Blaha stands among them — not for scoring points or winning titles, but for giving the Spartan Nation something even more powerful: a voice that united them all.

For decades, his calls have echoed through the stands and the airwaves. And now, his legacy will echo forever — a lasting reminder that some champions don’t wear helmets or jerseys. Some simply speak, and in doing so, make history.
