In a move that signals a new era for one of college basketball’s most storied programs, Indiana University has officially named Darian DeVries as the 31st head coach of the Hoosiers’ men’s basketball team. The announcement, made on March 18, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the college basketball world—and for good reason. IU is betting big that DeVries, a proven winner with a track record of building strong, competitive teams, is the man to end Indiana’s long-standing struggles and restore its championship legacy.

DeVries, 49, brings with him a deep coaching résumé that includes a transformative tenure at Drake University and a one-year turnaround stint at West Virginia. At Drake, he compiled an impressive 150–55 record over six seasons, capturing multiple Missouri Valley Conference championships and earning Coach of the Year honors twice. In 2024, he took over a struggling West Virginia program and immediately turned it around, guiding the Mountaineers to a 19–13 record and a .500 finish in Big 12 play. His success with programs lacking the historical prestige and resources of Indiana makes his hiring all the more intriguing—and perhaps all the more promising.

“We didn’t just want a coach—we wanted a leader who could build a program, not just a team,” said Indiana Athletic Director Scott Dolson during DeVries’ introductory press conference. “Darian brings a championship mentality, a proven system, and a hunger to win that aligns perfectly with our values and vision.”

DeVries steps into a role recently vacated by Mike Woodson, who served as head coach from 2021 to 2025. While Woodson did lead Indiana to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances, the Hoosiers never quite reached the level of dominance expected from a program with five national titles and a basketball-rich heritage. DeVries is now tasked with reigniting the fire and delivering the consistent success fans have craved for decades.

Known for his disciplined, defense-first approach and ability to develop under-recruited talent, DeVries is expected to bring both toughness and adaptability to the Hoosiers. Already, recruiting buzz is building around Bloomington, as DeVries is believed to be targeting high-level transfers and recommitting to player development as a cornerstone of his strategy.

The fanbase, while cautiously optimistic, is clearly energized. “This feels different,” said longtime IU supporter Mark Reynolds. “We’ve seen names come and go, but DeVries has that underdog grit that could be the key to turning this thing around.”

DeVries, in his first statement as head coach, made his mission clear: “Indiana Basketball is bigger than any one coach or player. It’s a tradition built on passion, pride, and toughness. I’m honored to be a part of it, and I’m ready to get to work.”

With expectations high and the Big Ten as competitive as ever, Darian DeVries isn’t just stepping into a job—he’s stepping into a legacy. Whether he can live up to it remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Indiana just made a bold move, and the college basketball world is watching.
