Guyana’s President Condemns Venezuela’s Invasion of ExxonMobil-Operated Oil Field

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – In a strongly worded statement, Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, has condemned Venezuela’s incursion into an offshore oil field operated by ExxonMobil.

The incursion, which occurred on Friday, saw Venezuelan naval vessels enter Guyana’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), sparking a tense standoff with Guyanese authorities.

“This is a clear violation of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” President Ali said in a statement. “We will not stand idly by while our rights are being trampled upon.”

The oil field in question, known as the Stabroek Block, is a major source of oil reserves for Guyana, with ExxonMobil serving as the operator.

Venezuela has long claimed ownership of the Essequibo region, which includes the Stabroek Block, but Guyana has maintained that the region is an integral part of its territory.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) issuing statements in support of Guyana’s sovereignty.

The United States has also weighed in, with a State Department spokesperson saying, “We urge Venezuela to respect Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

As tensions continue to simmer, Guyana’s President has vowed to take all necessary measures to protect his country’s interests.

“We will not be intimidated or bullied,” President Ali said. “We will stand firm in defense of our nation’s rights.”
