Toronto Maple Leafs fans know pain. For years, they’ve endured heartbreak, blown leads, and early playoff exits. But this season — the first under head coach Craig Berube — felt different. There was swagger. There was depth. There was hope.

And then came Game 7.

After clawing through a competitive Atlantic Division and showing signs of resilience in earlier playoff rounds, the Leafs crumbled in spectacular fashion when it mattered most. A humiliating 6–1 loss to the Florida Panthers in the final game of the second round sent Toronto packing, leaving fans stunned, furious, and disillusioned.

Much of that frustration is now pointed squarely at head coach Craig Berube, who was hired in May 2024 to replace Sheldon Keefe. Known for his no-nonsense attitude and Stanley Cup pedigree, Berube was supposed to bring structure and toughness to a talented roster that desperately needed both. Instead, many fans feel he brought confusion, hesitation — and more of the same results.

“This was supposed to be the guy to change everything,” one longtime fan posted online. “Instead, it’s just another chapter in the book of Maple Leafs disappointment.”

During the Game 7 disaster, Scotiabank Arena was anything but home ice advantage. As the score tilted further in Florida’s favor, fans began throwing beers and jerseys onto the ice, even targeting the Leafs bench. Berube stood behind his players stoically, but postgame comments only made things worse.

“For me, it’s all between the ears,” he said after the loss. “It’s a mindset. We weren’t mentally prepared to fight back.”

Those words hit Leafs Nation hard. While some acknowledge the mental side of playoff hockey is critical, others see Berube’s remarks as deflecting blame from his coaching decisions, questionable line combinations, and inability to adjust in real time.

“He can talk about mindset all he wants, but coaching matters,” another fan tweeted. “This team folded under pressure again — and that’s on Berube too.”

It’s not just angry tweets. Leafs forums and Facebook groups have exploded with calls for Berube to be held accountable. Some want him gone. Others are giving him one more season — but the leash is short.

Berube still has his defenders. A vocal minority believe he’s the right coach in the wrong moment — someone who inherited a fragile core and needs more time to reshape the team in his image. But in a city starving for success, patience is wearing thin.

As the offseason begins, big questions loom. Will Berube tweak his system? Will the Leafs front office give him another year with this core? Or will Toronto once again hit the reset button in a never-ending quest for playoff glory?

One thing is clear: Leafs fans believed this was finally the year.

Now, they’re just trying to recover from the heartbreak of watching it all fall apart — again. And right now, the finger is pointing at Craig Berube.
