East Lansing, MI – July 20, 2025

In a heartwarming and celebratory moment that extends beyond the gridiron, Michigan State University is honoring Head Football Coach Jonathan Smith and his wife, Candice, as the couple marks their 23rd wedding anniversary on July 20, 2025. The celebration recognizes not only their lasting commitment to one another but also the shared values of loyalty, unity, and leadership that Jonathan brings to the Spartans football program.

Coach Smith, who joined the Spartans in late 2023 and is entering his second season at the helm, has quickly become a respected figure at MSU. Known for his calm demeanor, disciplined coaching style, and commitment to developing both athletes and character, Smith’s leadership has already left a positive mark on the university and the community. Now, the Spartan family is taking a moment to salute the man behind the headset—and the woman who’s been by his side since long before the national spotlight.

Jonathan and Candice Smith, who met during their college years, were married on July 20, 2002. Together they’ve built a life centered on family, faith, and football. Candice, a supportive and devoted partner throughout Jonathan’s coaching journey—from his early days at Idaho and Oregon State to his current post at MSU—has played a vital behind-the-scenes role in helping balance the demands of coaching with family life. The couple are proud parents to three children: Robert, Bella, and Charles.

Michigan State’s athletic department organized a special recognition during the university’s summer athletic luncheon, where Coach Smith and Candice were presented with a commemorative plaque, flowers, and a personalized Spartans jersey featuring the number “23” to mark their milestone anniversary.

“Jonathan and Candice are a shining example of what it means to lead with integrity and love,” said MSU Athletic Director Alan Haller. “Coach Smith’s commitment to this university mirrors his commitment at home—consistent, thoughtful, and unwavering. We’re thrilled to celebrate this special occasion with them.”

Current and former players, staff, and fans also joined in with video messages and social media tributes using the hashtag #SpartanStrongLove, showcasing the bond between the Smith family and the MSU community. Many players highlighted how Coach Smith’s dedication to family values has shaped team culture and inspired them both on and off the field.

“This is more than just football,” said junior quarterback Aidan Chiles. “Coach always talks about building something that lasts—whether it’s in relationships or in life. Seeing him and Candice together, 23 years strong, just proves he lives what he preaches.”

The celebration was a refreshing reminder that even in the competitive world of college athletics, personal milestones and the values of love, respect, and commitment still matter. As the Spartans prepare for the 2025 season, they do so with a leader whose example goes far beyond the playbook.

For Jonathan and Candice Smith, July 20, 2025, isn’t just an anniversary—it’s a symbol of everything they’ve built together, both on the field and at home. And the entire Spartan Nation stands proudly beside them in celebration.
