MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS LOOK TO REASSERT DOMINANCE IN BIG TEN UNDER TOM IZZO’S VETERAN CORE…READ…MORE…
As the 2025–26 college basketball season approaches, the Michigan State Spartans are focused on reclaiming their status as perennial Big Ten contenders and national threats. Under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans return a seasoned roster and a renewed sense of purpose after an up-and-down campaign last season that ended in disappointment.
Despite flashes of brilliance, Michigan State finished the 2024–25 season with an early exit from the NCAA Tournament and questions about consistency on both ends of the floor. However, Izzo, now entering his 30th season at the helm, is not one to back down from a challenge. With a strong mix of returning veterans, high-upside underclassmen, and a top-tier recruiting class, the Spartans are poised to bounce back in a big way.
“We’ve got guys who’ve been through battles, and we’ve got young talent eager to prove themselves,” said Izzo. “This group is motivated. We know we didn’t meet expectations last year. That’s fuel.”
Leading the charge will be senior guard A.J. Hoggard, who provides leadership, toughness, and the ability to control the pace of the game. He’ll be joined by Jaden Akins, a versatile wing with elite defensive skills and improved shooting range. The Spartans will also look to sophomore big man Xavier Booker to make a leap after a promising freshman season.
A major source of optimism is Michigan State’s incoming class, highlighted by five-star forward Bryson Tucker. The 6-foot-7 wing is a polished scorer with a high basketball IQ and is expected to contribute immediately. His versatility on both ends of the floor makes him a potential game-changer for the Spartans.
“We’ve got depth and competition at every position,” Hoggard noted. “That’s how championships are built. Iron sharpens iron.”
Defense and rebounding—Izzo trademarks—will once again be central to Michigan State’s identity. After ranking outside the top 40 nationally in rebounding margin last season, the Spartans have made that a priority in offseason training. The coaching staff has also emphasized improving transition offense and cutting down on turnovers, areas that hurt the team in key moments last year.
The Big Ten will be as competitive as ever, with programs like Purdue, Illinois, and Indiana reloading. But Michigan State’s blend of experience, toughness, and elite coaching makes them a serious contender. If the team can stay healthy and develop offensive cohesion early, a deep March run is well within reach.
Spartan fans, known for their loyalty and passion, are eager to see their team return to form. With Izzo still driven and hungry for another Final Four, there’s a sense that something special could be brewing in East Lansing.
“We’ve got all the tools,” Izzo said. “Now it’s about putting it together, trusting the process, and getting better every day. That’s what Michigan State basketball is about.”
With expectations high and a legacy to uphold, the Spartans enter the new season with their
sights set on glory.
