MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS STUN FANS BY BRINGING BACK DRAYMOND GREEN AS ASSISTANT COACH — SIGNS 3-YEAR DEAL WORTH $6 MILLION….SEE WHY….
EAST LANSING, MI – The Michigan State Spartans basketball program sent shockwaves through the college basketball world today by announcing the return of one of its most iconic players, Draymond Green, who will join the coaching staff as an assistant coach under longtime head coach Tom Izzo. The deal, reportedly worth $6 million over three years, reunites the fiery NBA champion with the school that helped shape his legacy.
Green, a four-time NBA champion and cornerstone of the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty, will step away from professional basketball at the conclusion of the 2024–25 NBA season to begin his coaching journey in East Lansing.
“This is where it all began for me,” Green said at a packed press conference at the Breslin Center. “Coach Izzo and this program made me the man and player I am today. Coming back here isn’t just about basketball—it’s about giving back to the place that gave me everything.”
A Spartan Returns Home
Draymond Green’s name is synonymous with toughness, leadership, and intensity—values that align perfectly with the Michigan State basketball tradition. During his college career from 2008 to 2012, Green evolved from a raw freshman into the heartbeat of the team, eventually leading the Spartans to two Final Four appearances and earning Big Ten Player of the Year honors in 2012.
Coach Tom Izzo, clearly emotional during the announcement, didn’t hold back his excitement.
“This is a dream come true,” Izzo said. “Draymond was one of the best leaders I’ve ever coached. Now, to have him on my staff, teaching and mentoring the next generation of Spartans—that’s powerful. This program just got better.”
Why Now?
The decision comes after months of speculation surrounding Green’s future. While still under contract in the NBA, Green had openly discussed his desire to coach one day—and more importantly, his desire to return to his alma mater.
“This is about legacy,” Green said. “I’ve won at the highest level, but the opportunity to teach young men, to be in that locker room with Coach Izzo, and to wear ‘Michigan State’ across my chest again—that means more than any ring.”
Green’s role will focus on player development, defensive strategy, and leadership mentoring—areas where he excelled during his professional career.
Impact on the Program
Green’s arrival is already being felt across the college basketball landscape. Top recruits, NBA scouts, and media outlets are all turning their attention to East Lansing. The timing couldn’t be better, as the Spartans look to rebuild following an early exit from the 2025 NCAA Tournament.
“Draymond brings an edge—an energy—that we’ve been missing,” said junior forward Malik Robinson, who will be working directly with Green. “He’s intense, honest, and he knows how to win. I can’t wait to learn from him.”
Green is also expected to be a major asset on the recruiting trail. His NBA credentials, combined with his authenticity and charisma, could make Michigan State one of the most attractive destinations for high school and transfer talent.
Social Media Buzz and Fan Reaction
The Spartan community has erupted with excitement, with fans flooding social media with throwback clips of Green’s college days and messages of welcome.
“This is the best thing to happen to Michigan State basketball in years,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Green brings fire, toughness, and heart. This team is about to be scary.”
Even NBA stars chimed in, with Steph Curry jokingly tweeting, “Guess I’ll have to send scouting reports to Coach Green now.”
Looking Ahead
Green’s official start date is slated for July 1, just in time to join the Spartans during summer workouts and the recruiting season. While Izzo has not indicated any retirement plans, some speculate this move could eventually position Green as a potential successor.
When asked about his future coaching ambitions, Green smiled and said, “Right now, I’m just focused on winning with Coach Izzo and helping these kids grow. But hey—never say never.”
For now, Spartan Nation can rejoice. One of its greatest champions has returned home—not to play, but to lead.
