East Lansing, MI – July 26, 2025 — In a strategic move aimed at strengthening the future of its athletic programs, Michigan State University has officially announced the appointment of several new leadership team members across its sports department. The changes, unveiled earlier today by Athletic Director J Batt, reflect a renewed commitment to competitive success, student-athlete development, and long-term innovation across all facets of Spartan athletics.
“These appointments mark a pivotal moment for MSU Athletics,” said Batt during a press conference held at the Breslin Center. “We are bringing in individuals who are not only experts in their respective fields but who also share our vision of excellence, integrity, and holistic development for our student-athletes.”
Among the notable additions is Dr. Carla Jennings, who joins as the new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance. Dr. Jennings brings over 20 years of experience in sports medicine and athlete wellness from her time at Stanford and the University of Florida. Her primary focus will be enhancing injury prevention programs, integrating performance science, and fostering mental health initiatives tailored to student-athletes’ needs.
Joining her is Marcus Davis, appointed as the new Director of Football Operations. Davis previously served with the University of Georgia’s football program, where he played a key role in coordinating logistics and developing athlete support systems. His expertise is expected to bring new energy and structure to the Spartans’ football infrastructure, especially as Head Coach Jonathan Smith continues reshaping the roster and staff.
In the academic and compliance sector, Tanya Reynolds has been named Associate Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services. Reynolds, a Michigan native and MSU alumna, returns to her alma mater after several years at Northwestern. Her role will be central in bolstering academic support and ensuring compliance with NCAA standards, particularly as student-athlete rights and NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) policies continue to evolve.
Additionally, Carlos Medina, a marketing strategist with experience at the professional and collegiate levels, has been appointed as Chief Marketing and Fan Engagement Officer. Medina will oversee branding, game-day experience enhancements, and digital engagement to further connect Spartan Athletics with its loyal fan base.
“These leaders bring fresh perspectives and proven track records,” Batt emphasized. “Their collective expertise will allow MSU to compete at the highest levels while maintaining a culture of academic rigor, ethical leadership, and inclusivity.”
The announcement comes as Michigan State Athletics continues to rebound from years of transition and seeks to position itself as a national contender not just in football and basketball, but across all 25 varsity sports. With facilities improvements underway and increasing momentum in recruiting and alumni support, the university’s strategic appointments demonstrate a unified push toward excellence.
Student-athletes, coaches, and fans have expressed enthusiasm for the new hires. “It’s exciting to see the administration investing in our success on and off the field,” said Spartans linebacker Elijah Simmons. “These new leaders are going to help elevate our whole program.”
With the 2025–26 academic year fast approaching, Michigan State’s athletic department is poised for a transformative chapter. The newly appointed leaders will officially begin their roles in August, ahead of what promises to be a dynamic and impactful season for the Green and White.
