Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell Requests More Players Amid Depth Concerns…read more…

June 19, 2025 – Minneapolis, MN

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has formally requested additional reinforcements for the team’s roster as concerns grow over depth, injuries, and overall performance heading into the heart of offseason preparations. The appeal comes as the Vikings look to rebuild and strengthen key areas in hopes of staying competitive in a tightly contested NFC North division.

According to sources close to the organization, O’Connell has emphasized the need for added depth at multiple positions, particularly on the defensive line, cornerback, and offensive guard. Several offseason departures and a string of minor injuries during minicamp have left gaps that the coaching staff believes must be addressed ahead of training camp.

“Coach O’Connell is committed to building a team that can compete at a high level all season long,” said one team official. “He’s not just thinking about the starting 11 on each side of the ball — he’s focused on building a 53-man roster that can step up when injuries or challenges inevitably arise.”

O’Connell, now entering his third season as head coach, has led the team through a transitional phase following the departure of several veteran players and the implementation of a more dynamic offensive scheme. With young quarterback J.J. McCarthy expected to compete for the starting role, protecting him with a strong offensive line and ensuring a solid defense are top priorities.

The Vikings have already made some notable offseason moves, including the drafting of standout linebacker Dallas Turner and cornerback Khyree Jackson. However, O’Connell appears to believe more experience and competition are necessary to elevate the team to playoff contention.

“This league is about depth,” O’Connell said during a recent press conference. “We’ve got some young talent I’m excited about, but we need to make sure we have the pieces in place to withstand a 17-game season. We’re always evaluating where we can get better, and that includes looking at free agents or possible trades.”

The Vikings finished the 2024 season with a 7–10 record, falling short of a playoff berth after battling inconsistency and quarterback injuries. While some bright spots emerged — including the rise of wide receiver Jordan Addison and a promising defensive line — the team struggled to maintain momentum during the second half of the season.

General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is reportedly aligned with O’Connell’s assessment and is exploring options on the free agent market. Several experienced players remain unsigned, and mid-summer could bring trade opportunities as other teams finalize their rosters.

Fans have responded with cautious optimism to O’Connell’s comments, hopeful that proactive moves now can prevent the team from faltering during the regular season.

With training camp set to open in late July, the Vikings have a narrow window to act. All eyes will be on the front office as they weigh their next steps — and whether they will meet O’Connell’s call to bolster the squad.

The message from the head coach is clear: Minnesota wants to contend, and that starts with building the right roster today.
