Wolfville, NS – June 18, 2025 – Hockey royalty graced the Annapolis Valley on Tuesday night as Montreal Canadiens legend Larry Robinson served as the keynote speaker at the annual Axemen Athletic Dinner, held at Acadia University. The event brought together sports fans, community members, and alumni in support of Acadia’s varsity athletic programs, and was marked by laughter, reflection, and admiration for one of hockey’s most iconic figures.

Robinson, a Hall of Fame defenseman and six-time Stanley Cup champion with the Canadiens, captivated the sold-out crowd with stories from his illustrious NHL career and insights on leadership, teamwork, and perseverance. His presence added star power to an already highly anticipated fundraiser, which helps generate essential funding for Acadia’s varsity teams.

“It’s always a pleasure to support university athletics,” Robinson said. “Sports taught me discipline, hard work, and how to be part of something bigger than myself. I see that same passion and commitment here at Acadia.”

The former Canadiens blueliner spoke candidly about his journey from a small-town upbringing in Ontario to becoming a cornerstone of one of hockey’s most storied franchises. With his trademark humility and dry wit, Robinson recounted tales of playing alongside legends like Guy Lafleur and Ken Dryden, as well as his transition into coaching after retirement.

Robinson also drew parallels between his career and the experiences of today’s student-athletes. “Whether it’s Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final or a university playoff match, the core values don’t change — preparation, resilience, and belief in your teammates,” he told the crowd.

Organizers of the Axemen Athletic Dinner said Robinson’s appearance helped make the evening one of the most memorable in the event’s history. “To have someone of Larry’s stature support our programs is a huge honour,” said Acadia Athletic Director Kevin Dickie. “He embodies everything we strive to teach our athletes — integrity, excellence, and leadership.”

The evening included a three-course dinner, silent and live auctions, and tributes to graduating Acadia athletes. Funds raised will go directly toward scholarships, facility upgrades, and travel expenses for Acadia’s 11 varsity teams.

Acadia head football coach Jeff Cummins, who helped organize the event, called Robinson’s talk “inspiring” and “a reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity.”

Many student-athletes in attendance said hearing from a hockey legend reaffirmed their own aspirations. “Having Larry Robinson here really motivates us to give our best every day,” said Emma MacLeod, a senior with the women’s soccer team. “It’s amazing to see someone who’s reached the highest levels take the time to support student athletics.”

The Axemen Athletic Dinner has become a cornerstone event for the university and the local community, celebrating not only sporting excellence but the bonds that athletics forge. With Larry Robinson’s speech as the highlight of the evening, this year’s edition proved once again why sport remains a powerful unifying force.

As applause filled the room at the end of his remarks, Robinson smiled and nodded. “Remember,” he said, “champions aren’t just born — they’re built, day by day, on campuses just like this one.”
