NASCAR Legend Dale Hawkins Confirmed Dead at 76….

Charlotte, NC — April 10, 2025

The world of motorsports is in mourning today following the passing of NASCAR legend Dale Hawkins, who died early Thursday morning at the age of 76.

A spokesperson for the Hawkins family confirmed the news, stating that the Hall of Fame driver passed away peacefully at his home in Charlotte, surrounded by his family. The cause of death was reported to be complications from a recent stroke.

Hawkins, widely regarded as one of the fiercest competitors of NASCAR’s golden era, made his debut in 1972 and quickly rose through the ranks with his aggressive driving style and unrelenting determination. Over his 25-year career, he racked up 49 Cup Series victories and won two championships in 1983 and 1986. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2009.

Known for his rivalry with fellow legend Bobby Carmichael and his iconic No. 27 Chevrolet, Hawkins became a fan favorite both for his grit on the track and his humble nature off of it.

“Dale wasn’t just a racer — he was a symbol of the sport’s heart and soul,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said in a statement. “His passion, talent, and love for the fans shaped an era and left an indelible legacy.”

Tributes have poured in from across the racing world, with former teammates and current stars remembering Hawkins as a mentor, friend, and pioneer.

A public memorial service is being planned in Charlotte, with details to be announced by the family in the coming days. NASCAR also confirmed a moment of silence will be observed before Sunday’s race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
