Nittany Lions Manager Breaks Down Player Progress in Midseason Evaluation
At the midway point of the 2025 college football season, Penn State head coach James Franklin delivered a candid and comprehensive evaluation of his team’s progress during a media session earlier this week. With the Nittany Lions sitting at a solid 5–2 record and still in the hunt for Big Ten contention, Franklin emphasized both the strides made and the work still ahead for his roster.
“We’ve seen growth in key areas,” Franklin said. “But we’re not where we want to be yet. There’s a high ceiling for this group, and now is the time to sharpen focus.”
Quarterback Development Remains Key Focus
All eyes have been on sophomore quarterback Drew Allar, who entered the season with high expectations as the future face of the program. Franklin praised Allar’s composure and decision-making through the first half of the season.
“Drew has done a great job managing the offense, especially under pressure,” Franklin noted. “He’s protecting the ball well, and his leadership is maturing week by week.”
Allar has thrown for 1,850 yards and 14 touchdowns with just two interceptions, showing solid command of the offense. Still, Franklin stressed that more explosive plays are needed as the team enters the tougher stretch of the schedule.
Defense Drawing Praise for Physicality and Depth
Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz’s unit continues to be a stronghold for the Nittany Lions. Penn State ranks among the top three in the Big Ten in total defense and sacks, anchored by standout edge rusher Chop Robinson and linebacker Abdul Carter.
“Abdul’s intensity is unmatched,” Franklin said. “He’s all over the field, and his communication with the rest of the unit is making a huge difference.”
Robinson, who leads the team with six sacks, has become a nightmare for opposing offensive lines. Franklin also acknowledged the impact of the secondary, highlighting sophomore cornerback Kalen King’s strong coverage skills.
Offensive Line and Run Game Need More Consistency
While Penn State’s offensive line has shown improvement in pass protection, Franklin was honest about the team’s need to generate a more consistent ground attack.
“Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen are two of the best backs in the country,” Franklin said. “But we need to create better running lanes. That starts with up front execution and communication.”
The Lions are averaging just over 160 rushing yards per game, which Franklin sees as below their potential.
Special Teams and Intangibles
Franklin also credited the team’s special teams unit, especially punter Riley Thompson and kicker Alex Felkins, who has been reliable on field goals and kickoffs.
“This team has heart,” Franklin added. “What we need now is attention to detail, finishing games strong, and trusting the process.”
Looking Ahead
With matchups looming against Ohio State and Michigan, the Nittany Lions know the real test lies ahead. Franklin’s evaluation reflects a team that’s talented, motivated, and aware that the path to greatness lies in refining the details.
