LEXINGTON, KY – June 11, 2025 – University of Kentucky forward Otega Oweh has officially announced his return to the Wildcats for the 2025–26 college basketball season, putting an end to speculation about a potential transfer or early departure for professional opportunities. In a statement released Tuesday evening, Oweh detailed the reasons behind his decision, emphasizing loyalty, unfinished business, and personal growth.
Oweh, who averaged 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game last season, played a crucial role in Kentucky’s Sweet 16 run. While his breakout performances sparked talk of a possible leap to the NBA Draft or a high-profile transfer, the 6-foot-5 wing made it clear that Kentucky still felt like home.
“There’s a lot of noise when you’re weighing options,” Oweh said in a video posted to his social media accounts. “But when I took a step back, I realized everything I need is right here in Lexington. The coaches believe in me, my teammates are family, and we have a championship to chase.”
Oweh also cited his relationship with head coach Mark Pope, who took over the program last season following John Calipari’s departure. “Coach Pope came in with a vision, and he’s held true to it,” Oweh said. “He challenged me to become not just a better player, but a better leader.”
The former four-star recruit transferred to Kentucky from Oklahoma last season and quickly earned praise for his two-way play, toughness, and versatility. His return provides a major boost to Kentucky’s 2025–26 roster, which includes a blend of incoming freshmen and experienced transfers.
According to team insiders, Oweh’s decision to stay was influenced by his desire to improve his draft stock and build a lasting legacy at Kentucky.
“He could’ve tested the waters, and he had offers elsewhere,” said assistant coach Cody Fueger. “But Otega is the kind of guy who wants to win, who wants to grow. That says a lot about his character.”
Oweh acknowledged that returning wasn’t the easy choice, especially given the current landscape of college basketball, where players frequently move between programs in search of better deals or exposure.
“Yeah, I had calls, and I thought about it,” Oweh admitted. “But I’ve already transferred once. I didn’t want to run from the grind. I wanted to build something real here.”
With Oweh returning, Kentucky is expected to open the season ranked in the top 15, with national analysts pointing to his leadership as a key factor in the team’s potential success.
“Next year, we’re coming back stronger,” Oweh said. “This isn’t just about me. It’s about the team, the fans, and putting Kentucky back where it belongs — at the top.”
Oweh’s return has already sparked excitement among Wildcat Nation, with fans flooding social media with messages of support and anticipation. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Lexington, where Oweh’s loyalty and determination could be the cornerstone of a championship run.
