*Guyana Seeks World Court Intervention to Halt Venezuela’s Election Plans in Disputed Esequibo Region*

GEORGETOWN, GUYANA – The government of Guyana has filed a request with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to intervene in Venezuela’s plans to hold elections in the disputed Esequibo region.

In a statement released by the Guyanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed its “strong objection” to Venezuela’s plans, which it claims are a “clear violation” of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“The Esequibo region is an integral part of Guyana, and any attempts by Venezuela to hold elections there would be a blatant disregard for international law and our country’s rights,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The dispute over the Esequibo region dates back to the 19th century, with both Guyana and Venezuela claiming sovereignty over the territory. The ICJ has been involved in the dispute since 2018, when Guyana filed a case against Venezuela seeking a definitive ruling on the border controversy.

Venezuela has yet to comment on Guyana’s request to the ICJ, but the move is likely to escalate tensions between the two nations.
