Tyler Van Dyke Injured in Preseason Scrimmage: Former Miami Star Quarterback Undergoes Evaluation for Potential Knee Issue…read more…

NFL rookie quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, the former University of Miami standout, suffered a potential knee injury during a preseason scrimmage on Monday, sending concern throughout the team and raising questions about his availability ahead of the regular season. The injury occurred during a non-contact drill when Van Dyke appeared to plant awkwardly on his right leg while rolling out of the pocket.

Witnesses at the closed practice reported that Van Dyke immediately went down clutching his knee and remained on the turf for several moments before trainers rushed to his side. Although he was able to walk off the field under his own power with assistance, he was visibly limping and was taken inside for further evaluation.

Team officials have confirmed that Van Dyke is undergoing medical imaging, including an MRI, to determine the extent of the injury. While no official diagnosis has been released, the initial concern is for a possible ligament sprain or tear. The team’s medical staff and head coach are expected to make a formal announcement once results are available.

“This is the part of the game that you never want to see,” the head coach said in a brief post-practice interview. “Tyler has been working incredibly hard, adjusting well to the playbook, and showing great leadership on and off the field. We’re hoping for the best and will provide updates as soon as we have them.”

Van Dyke, who was drafted earlier this year following a productive career at Miami, has been in competition for a backup quarterback spot and was seen as a long-term developmental prospect with potential to climb the depth chart. Known for his strong arm, poise in the pocket, and football IQ, Van Dyke had made significant strides during OTAs and early training camp sessions.

The injury comes at a pivotal time in his young NFL career. Preseason games were expected to be his opportunity to earn live reps and showcase his talent in game-like conditions. A setback now could limit those opportunities and impact his place on the final roster.

Fans and former teammates quickly took to social media to express their support for Van Dyke, with many former Hurricanes players, including Kamren Kinchens and Zion Nelson, posting words of encouragement.

“Prayers up for my guy Tyler,” wrote one former Miami teammate on Instagram. “He’s a fighter and will bounce back stronger.”

Morgan Pankow, Van Dyke’s ex-wife, who recently parted ways with him amicably, also commented on a post about his injury, wishing him a full recovery—further highlighting the mutual respect that remains between them.

As of Tuesday morning, the team has not ruled Van Dyke out for the remainder of the preseason but noted that his status will depend heavily on the results of his MRI. A minor sprain could see him return within weeks, but a more serious injury such as an ACL tear would likely end his season before it begins.

The team, and Van Dyke himself, now await answers as his professional football journey hits an early test of resilience.
