Leicester’s £100m Training Ground Branded a Hidden Obstacle by Former Leicester City Manager as Club Battles League One Reality.
Former Leicester City manager Gary Rowett has pointed to the club’s ultra-modern training complex as an unexpected factor in their cultural struggles, arguing that its luxurious design has undermined the togetherness needed to fight their way out of crisis.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Rowett reflected on his short-term spell in charge between February and June 2026, when he was tasked with stabilising a side hit by a six-point deduction for Profitability and Sustainability Rules breaches yet ultimately oversaw their relegation to League One for only the second time in the club’s history.
The £100 million Seagrave facility, opened in December 2020 and widely regarded as one of the finest training grounds in world football, boasts 21 playing surfaces, an indoor training dome, advanced sports science laboratories, a hydrotherapy suite, a sports turf academy and even a private nine-hole golf course. Club officials originally intended it to unite the organisation and support player development and recruitment. Rowett’s experience, however, painted a different picture.

“It’s so difficult to criticise it, but it’s almost so perfectly designed that players don’t really stay,” he told talkSPORT. “I’ve been at places where you’ve got nothing. They’ll find any old room and make it a player’s room and they’ll stay until three or four o’clock in the afternoon together. Whereas with Leicester, there’s so many rooms there that you hardly see the players together in one room and I think that’s one of the big battles. They’ve got to recreate that culture of togetherness. It’s so hard.”
Rowett, who also played for Leicester earlier in his career, insisted he found the club itself manageable during his caretaker stint. “I found Leicester fine,” he said. “I didn’t feel as though Leicester was a difficult scenario. It’s just that the team wasn’t built for a relegation fight at that time. It was so, so difficult to win a game of football.” He attributed much of the longer-term decline to a loss of the underdog mentality that once defined the 2016 Premier League champions. After that unlikely triumph, key relationships and a sense of hierarchy made it harder to maintain the meritocracy and collective spirit of the dressing room.

“You win the Premier League, certain players have key relationships, maybe with the owner as well,” Rowett explained. “Those players grow in importance in some way. You rely on them but then it actually becomes very difficult to control what they do. Any football dressing room is built on that meritocracy and togetherness. It always felt like a club that once it got to those heights… it was an underdog wasn’t it that was fighting against the world. And when you’ve won the Premier League, what are you fighting against? It’s been hard to keep that flame alive and I think that’s been one of the biggest challenges.”

Leicester now sit 11th in League One under current manager Russell Martin, seven points behind leaders Huddersfield after collecting 18 points from their first 12 matches. Recent form has shown signs of recovery, with three wins in their last four games leaving them just three points outside the play-off places. Fan frustration remains high, directed at both the dugout and the board, while the club is reportedly up for sale amid ongoing criticism of financial mismanagement under owners King Power. Since Brendan Rodgers’ departure in 2023, nine different managers have been appointed in an attempt to arrest the slide.
The contrast between the gleaming facilities and the team’s current third-tier status underlines the scale of Leicester’s fall. Rowett’s comments suggest that rebuilding the collective culture he believes has eroded may prove as important as any tactical or recruitment solutions if the Foxes are to climb back up the pyramid.
