Kevin O’Connell Named NFL Coach of the Year After Leading Vikings to Historic 14-Win Season…read more…

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Kevin O’Connell has been named the 2024 NFL Coach of the Year after orchestrating one of the most impressive seasons in Minnesota Vikings history. In just his third year as head coach, O’Connell led the team to a 14–3 regular-season record—the second-best mark ever posted by the franchise—and cemented his place among the NFL’s elite coaching minds.

O’Connell’s Vikings were a model of consistency, resilience, and execution throughout the 2024 season. With an efficient offense, a revitalized defense, and a strong team culture, Minnesota surged to the top of the NFC North and secured a top seed in the playoffs. Though the postseason run ended sooner than fans had hoped, the regular season success was undeniable and historic.

“Kevin O’Connell has brought a winning mentality and a modern approach to this organization,” said Vikings owner Mark Wilf. “His leadership has energized our locker room, our fan base, and our entire organization. This award is a well-deserved recognition of his work and vision.”

The 2024 campaign was defined by several standout moments, including key wins over the San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers. O’Connell’s ability to adapt his play-calling and maintain a competitive edge even during tough stretches of the schedule was instrumental in keeping Minnesota atop the conference standings.

The Vikings offense flourished under O’Connell’s leadership, ranking among the league’s top units in both scoring and total yards. Quarterback play remained steady despite injuries, while the team leaned on a balanced attack that featured explosive plays from a deep receiving corps and a rejuvenated ground game.

Defensively, Minnesota showed marked improvement, thanks in part to O’Connell’s trust in his coordinators and a commitment to aggressive, smart football. The team’s red zone defense ranked among the NFL’s best, and turnovers proved critical in several close victories.

Beyond the field, O’Connell also received the 2025 Horrigan Award from the Pro Football Writers of America for his professional and media-friendly conduct. Known for his poise and clear communication, he has become a respected figure both inside and outside the locker room.

In January 2025, the Vikings rewarded O’Connell with a multiyear contract extension, reaffirming their belief in his long-term vision. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also received an extension, solidifying a front office and coaching partnership that has already yielded impressive results: a 34–17 overall record and two playoff appearances since 2022.

As the 2025 season approaches, optimism in Minnesota is high. The Vikings are developing rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, continuing to build around their offensive weapons, and focusing on sustaining the culture of accountability and growth that O’Connell has established.

“This award isn’t about me,” O’Connell said during a press conference. “It’s about the players, the coaches, and the entire Vikings organization. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve done—and even more excited about what’s next.”

For the Vikings and their fans, Kevin O’Connell has brought more than just wins. He’s brought belief, identity, and a renewed pursuit of greatness.
