Montreal, QC – July 10, 2025 — In a heartfelt and celebratory ceremony held at the Bell Centre, the Montreal Canadiens’ Executive Director, Marc Gervais, presented the franchise’s annual “Excellence Behind the Crest” award to longtime equipment manager, René Bouchard, recognizing his unwavering commitment, professionalism, and outstanding contributions to the organization.

The award, created to honor members of the Canadiens staff whose work largely takes place behind the scenes, was introduced five years ago to acknowledge the essential support roles that help maintain the club’s storied legacy. Bouchard, a 22-year veteran with the team, has become a cornerstone of the Canadiens’ operations, earning the respect and admiration of players, coaches, and executives alike.

“This team is built not just on the talent we see on the ice, but on the dedication and passion that exists behind closed doors,” Gervais said during the ceremony. “René’s tireless work ethic, his loyalty to the crest, and the trust he’s earned from everyone in this building make him more than deserving of this honor.”

Known for arriving at the rink before sunrise and often being the last to leave, Bouchard has been instrumental in maintaining top-tier equipment standards, supporting players during critical moments, and mentoring younger staff members. Several players, both past and present, offered tributes during the event.

“René’s the kind of guy you want in your corner every day,” said Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki. “He’s not just our equipment manager—he’s family. You always know you’re taken care of with him around.”

The ceremony, held during a private team event ahead of preseason training activities, was attended by current players, staff, former Canadiens legends, and members of the Bouchard family. The team also unveiled a short documentary video chronicling Bouchard’s journey with the organization, complete with behind-the-scenes footage and personal testimonials.

In his acceptance speech, an emotional Bouchard thanked the team, saying, “I never expected anything like this. I’ve just been doing what I love, with the team I love. It’s been an honor to be part of this incredible franchise, and I’m deeply grateful for this recognition.”

The Canadiens have long prided themselves on fostering a culture of excellence not just among their athletes but across every department within the organization. Gervais emphasized the importance of shining a light on these often-unsung heroes, stating, “We win and lose as one team. People like René are the glue that holds this organization together.”

As the Canadiens gear up for what they hope will be a breakthrough season, the recognition of staff like Bouchard reinforces the franchise’s commitment to unity, tradition, and excellence on every level.

The award presentation concluded with a standing ovation and a ceremonial banner unveiled in the staff wing of the Bell Centre, commemorating René Bouchard’s contributions to the Montreal Canadiens legacy.
