In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through the college basketball world, Caleb Johnson, the No. 1-ranked player in the transfer portal, has officially committed to Ohio University Men’s Basketball, choosing the Bobcats over powerhouse programs like Xavier.

Johnson, a 6-foot-9 center who began his career at Indiana University, entered the portal in June after redshirting his freshman year. Despite receiving interest from several high-major programs, including Xavier, Dayton, UAB, and even Miami (FL), Johnson opted to take his talents to the Mid-American Conference, giving Ohio one of its most high-profile commitments in recent memory.

“I wanted to go somewhere I could lead, play right away, and help build something special,” Johnson said during his commitment video posted on social media. “Ohio gave me the vision, the support, and the hunger I was looking for. This isn’t just a stop — it’s a mission.”

Ohio head coach Jeff Boals, who has quietly built a competitive program in the MAC, called the commitment a “program-changing addition.”

“Caleb is the kind of player who elevates everyone around him,” Boals said. “He’s been tested at the high-major level, and now he’s ready to dominate and lead a team. We’re thrilled to welcome him to Athens.”

Johnson was widely considered one of the most skilled big men in the portal this offseason. At Indiana, his development under a Big Ten system sharpened his rebounding, footwork, and defensive IQ. Standing at 6’9″ and weighing 235 pounds, he brings a mix of physicality and finesse that’s rare at the mid-major level. Scouts have praised his ability to protect the rim, run the floor, and finish through contact.

For Ohio, this commitment is not just a win — it’s a statement.

The Bobcats have traditionally been competitive in the MAC, but with Johnson anchoring the paint, they are now seen as early favorites for the 2025-26 title. Johnson’s presence could also help attract additional transfer talent, especially from guards looking to pair with a dominant big.

Fans of Xavier were caught off guard by Johnson’s decision. The Musketeers were believed to be the frontrunners, offering him a chance to play in the Big East under the national spotlight. However, according to sources close to the situation, Johnson was drawn to Ohio’s plan to center the offense around him and the guaranteed minutes that would come with it.

“He wanted to be the guy — not one of five guys,” a source said. “At Ohio, he’s going to be the face of the program.”

As the MAC prepares for another competitive season, all eyes will now be on Athens, where Caleb Johnson is expected to make an immediate and dominant impact. His arrival signals a bold new era for Ohio basketball — one where the Bobcats are no longer just contenders, but true threats on the national mid-major stage.
