The succession became official when Queen Margrethe II signed the official document saying she was giving up her throne.

King Frederik X of Denmark has taken the throne from his mother, Queen Margrethe II, who has officially given up her reign after 52 years.

Margrethe, who is 83 years old, shocked the country on New Year’s Eve when she said she was going to give up the throne on her own. She would be the first Danish queen in almost 900 years to do this.

The new queen took over when she signed the statement of her resignation at a meeting of the Council of State at Parliament on Sunday, according to the royal palace.

People in Denmark don’t get crowned, even though they have one of the oldest kingdoms in the world.

Government officials like Margrethe, Frederik, 55, his 51-year-old wife Mary, who was born in Australia and is now queen, and their 18-year-old son Christian, who is the new heir to the throne, were all there.

Mette Frederiksen, the prime minister of Denmark, made Frederik king on the rooftop of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen after the signing.

Frederik said in his first speech as king, “My hope is to become a king of tomorrow who brings people together.”

“This is something I’ve done all my life.” “I take on this job with pride, respect, and joy,” he said as he looked out over a crowd of happy people.

Soon after, his wife and children, including Princess Isabelle, 16, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 13, joined him on the porch.

A lot of general support
Tens of thousands of people from all over Denmark gathered in the capital to watch the events, even though it was almost freezing outside. This shows how popular the monarchy is in the country of six million people.

“We came here today to see history being made.” A 30-year-old pilot named Soren Kristian Bisgaard told Reuters, “We just had to be here.”

“I love the royal family a lot.” I used to be in the Royal Life Guards and watch over the royal house.

He also said, “I’m very proud to have done that and to be here today.”

The people are very excited about the government when King Frederik and his wife take the throne.

A recent poll done after Margrethe said she would step down showed that 82% of Danes think Frederik will do well or very well in his new job, and 86% thought the same thing about Mary.

Margrethe the Queen

Margrethe has been one of the most well-known people in Denmark since she was born in 1940.

People in Denmark admired the 1.82-meter (6-foot) tall, chain-smoking queen for her friendly personality and skills as a linguist and designer. She often walked the streets of Copenhagen almost alone.

She learned judo and did stamina tests in the snow while she was a princess in a Danish women’s air force unit. She loved skiing. Even as she got older, Margrethe stayed tough.

In 2011, when she was 70 years old, she wore a military jumpsuit to meet Danish troops in southern Afghanistan.

As queen, she traveled all over the country and often went to Greenland and the Faeroe Islands, which are part of the Danish Realm but have some independence.

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik had a son named Frederik. He was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He has one brother, Prince Joachim, who is younger than him.

Frederik is also a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark, which is also called the Danish National Church. This is required for members of the Danish royal family, especially those who are currently king or queen.

He will be king of Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. But the legislature and the government of Denmark will still have official power.
