Several news sources said that a girl died when the hole she was digging with her brother at a Florida beach fell on top of them.

A report from the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday said that just after 3 p.m., emergency workers in Broward County got a call that a 5-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy were stuck in the sand in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

The scene was on the east coast of Florida, north of Miami. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue also responded.

Sandra King, a spokeswoman for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the two kids were digging a hole about 5 to 6 feet deep when it caved in. The girl was buried all the way under the boy, King told the Sentinel. The boy was buried up to his chest.

BSO said the two kids were siblings who were on vacation with their parents from Indiana in the area. The event is still being looked into.

WTVJ-Ch. 6 got cell phone video of at least 10 people running to the scene of the accident right after the hole opened up to try to dig the kids out.

According to BSO, both kids were taken to hospitals to get better. Later that day, it was said that the girl was dead.

“Our hearts are heavy in LBTS today after learning that two children were trapped in the sand,” the city of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea said on their website. “We are doing everything we can to support our first responders.”
